Toll roads in Moldova
In Moldova, all foreign vehicles must have a valid vignette to drive on any public road, not just motorways. The vignette requirement applies to the entire network, including magistral roads M, republican roads R, and even smaller regional and local roads.
The Moldovan road system is divided into two main categories:
Magistral roads M (Drumuri magistrale) – the country’s major highways linking Chișinău with Romania, Ukraine, and Transnistria.
Republican roads R (Drumuri republicane) – regional roads connecting towns, districts, and border crossings to the main M network.
All of these routes are toll roads for foreign vehicles. The vignette acts as a national road tax, collected to maintain and improve Moldova’s transport infrastructure. Enforcement is handled electronically through license plate recognition and roadside patrols.
Magistral roads
Moldova’s magistral roads connect key cities, industrial regions and international border points:
M1 from the Ukrainian border via Dubăsari and Chișinău to Leușeni on the Romanian border.
M2 from Chișinău through Orhei and Soroca to the Ukrainian border.
M2.1 short link between the M2 and Cosăuți.
M3 from Chișinău south via Cimișlia, Comrat and Vulcănești to Romania.
M3.1 branch from the M3 towards Comrat East.
M4 from Tiraspol through Dubăsari and Rîbnița to Hristovaia and the Ukrainian border.
M5 the country’s main east–west corridor, running from the Ukrainian border near Edineț through Bălți, Chișinău and Tiraspol before re-entering Ukraine.

Driving in Moldova
Every public road in Moldova, whether an M highway, an R regional road or a smaller rural route, requires a valid vignette for foreign-registered vehicles. There are no toll-free sections for international visitors.
The vignette acts as a single national permit, giving you access to the entire road network for the chosen validity period. Buying it online ensures your license plate is registered before entering the country, saving time at the border and avoiding on-the-spot fines.
