Toll roads in Slovakia
In Slovakia, motorway tolls apply on two types of roads: motorways D (diaľnica) and expressways R (rýchlostná cesta). These are marked on road signs with a red square containing a white D or R and the route number.
A vignette is not required for every kilometre of these roads, but only on specific tolled sections. At the start of each tolled section, you will see a clear road sign indicating the vignette requirement. The toll is always paid via the digital vignette, which is linked to your license plate.
Many D and R roads are also part of the European route network, and therefore carry an additional green E designation. This does not affect the toll obligation, it simply shows that the road is part of the broader international network connecting Slovakia with neighbouring countries.
Because tolled and toll-free sections can sometimes overlap or merge, it is not always obvious where the vignette applies. If you plan to drive on any D or R road in Slovakia, the safest option is to purchase a vignette in advance. That way you are always compliant and avoid unexpected fines.

Some stretches of motorway or expressway are marked as “temporarily exempt”, which means that no vignette is required for the time being. These exemptions often apply to short bypasses, unfinished sections under construction, or roads that are awaiting official integration into the vignette system.
Even if you only expect to use one of the “exempt” sections, it is often wiser to buy a vignette in advance. Roadworks, diversions or simple navigation mistakes could still bring you onto a tolled section, and the fines are much higher than the vignette price.
