Toll in Slovakia
Toll payments in Slovakia are handled through e-vignettes, which are linked to your vehicle's license plate.
Purchase online
You can easily purchase an e-vignette online at Tollvignettes.com using credit card, PayPal, or another payment method. After completing your purchase, you'll receive a confirmation email, ensuring a quick and hassle-free experience for traveling on Slovakia's motorways.
In Slovakia, toll roads are divided into motorways, marked with a D (diaľnica), and expressways, marked with an R (rýchlostná cesta). A valid vignette is required to drive on these roads. Motorways and expressways are indicated on signs with a red square containing a white D or R, followed by a number. Some R roads overlap with other R roads or D roads and may merge into one another.
Both types of roads can also be marked with an E. This designation refers to the same roads as marked with a D or R, but the E indicates that they are part of a broader European network spanning multiple countries.
The Slovak vignette is required for the following motorways:

In addition, there are bypasses around certain cities that are exempt from the vignette requirement. This applies to the following cities:
Bratislava
Nitra
Košice
Prešov
Poprad
Žilina
Banská Bystrica

Light vehicle
Vehicles with four wheels and a total weight of up to 3,500 kg (including trailer or caravan) fall into this category.
Trailer/caravan
If the total weight of the vehicle and the trailer exceeds 3,500 kg, an additional vignette is required for the trailer. If the total weight remains below 3,500 kg, no additional vignette is needed.

In Slovakia, different toll rules apply to vehicles over 3,500 kg, including lorries and heavy-duty vehicles. Instead of a fixed-rate vignette, these vehicles must use an electronic toll system that calculates the toll based on the distance traveled.
How the Toll is Calculated
The toll amount depends on several factors:
Distance traveled (kilometers driven)
Number of axles
Road category (motorways, expressways, or selected national roads)
Vehicle’s environmental classification (EURO emission standards)
On-Board Unit (OBU) Requirement
Drivers of these vehicles must install an On-Board Unit (OBU) to comply with toll regulations. The OBU automatically records the distance traveled and calculates the toll fees accordingly.
Driving without a valid e-vignette can lead to hefty fines. Don’t take the risk, secure the right vignette for your category before hitting the road.
In Slovakia, it is not allowed to drive on toll roads without a valid vignette. The vignette is mandatory from the moment you enter a toll road. If you do not have a valid vignette, you risk receiving a fine.
When purchasing the vignette, the vehicle's license plate is registered. Cameras along the toll roads automatically scan license plates and verify if a valid vignette is linked, ensuring quick detection of violations.
Yes, it is possible to change the license plate associated with your vignette. To do so, you must complete the application form on the website of the Slovak toll authority.
Vehicles belonging to certain organizations may be exempt from the vignette requirement. Some vehicles are fully exempt, while others are exempt from payment but still require registration. The following vehicles fall into these categories:
Vehicles exempt from vignette payment (no registration required):
Government vehicles: interior, defense, armed forces, NATO, and international agreements.
Special categories: historic vehicles, financial administration vehicles, vehicles of national security authority, Slovak information service, prison and court guard.
Vehicles exempt from vignette payment (registration required):
Emergency and municipal services: rescue units, fire departments, municipal police, Slovak Red Cross.
Road management: administrators of government-owned roads and motorways (excluding concessionaires).
Social and disability services: disability parking vehicles, non-profit social services, child protection vehicles.
Unfortunately, it is not possible to postpone the start of validity after purchasing a vignette. Once the purchase is completed, the selected validity period is fixed and cannot be adjusted. Therefore, we recommend carefully selecting the desired start date during the purchase process.
