Understanding toll roads in Austria

Austria operates a vignette system for using most motorways and expressways. This system consists of digital vignettes linked to the vehicle's registration number and the traditional stick-on vignettes. Some specific road sections are subject to an additional section toll.

Toll roads

Vignettes are compulsory on virtually all motorways in Austria. However, on some roads in Austria there is an additional toll. These include the following roads:

  • A 9 Pyhrn motorway Gleinalm and Bosruck tunnel
  • A 10 Tauernautobahn and Klatschberg tunnel
  • A 11 Karawanken motorway
  • A 13 Brenner motorway
  • S 16 Arlberg motorway.

Not all roads in Austria require a vignette. There are some exceptions:

  • A1 West motorway (border crossing Walserberg to Salzburg-Nord), Salzburg Province
  • A12 Inntal motorway (border crossing Kiefersfelden to Kufstein-Süd), Tyrol
  • A14 motorway (border crossing Hörbranz to Hohenems), Vorarlberg. Vignette exemption applies from (coming from the south) or junction 23 Hohenems Diepoldsau
  • A26 (Linz motorway - currently under construction, including the new Danube suspension bridge), Upper Austria. You will only need a digital vignette after the completion of the entire A26 and its connection to the A7.

Vignette requirements and categories

Any vehicle under 3.5 tonnes total weight, including passenger cars, motorhomes and light commercial vehicles, is required to have a vignette. Trailers are an exception; only the towing vehicle is required to carry a vignette.

The GO-Box: for heavier vehicles

For vehicles over 3.5 tonnes, Austria is introducing the GO-Box, an electronic toll system that uses GPS tracking to calculate the distance travelled and thus the toll. This system is specially designed for heavier vehicles, including larger motorhomes, trucks and buses.
Choosing the right vignette: prices and validity period
Depending on the length and purpose of your stay in Austria, you can choose from different validity periods for your vignette. You can choose from a vignette for 1 day, 10 days, 2 months and a year. This offers flexibility and ensures you only pay for what you need.

Purchase and availability

Although you cannot purchase the vignette directly through our site, ASFINAG offers a simple and accessible way to purchase both digital and sticky vignettes online or at border crossings and selected outlets.

The importance of a vignette

Ignoring the vignette requirement can result in significant fines. To avoid fines and inconvenience during your trip, it is crucial to obtain a valid vignette in advance and check its validity.

Fines and enforcement

Austrian authorities use sophisticated camera systems to check for vignette compliance. Make sure your vignette is attached correctly to avoid any penalties. The fine for driving without a vignette is €120, so be sure you have a vignette.
